Title: Public Health Intern
Status: Temporary / Seasonal
Hourly Rate: $9.00; $15.00; $18.00

Description:

Fishers Health Department (FHD) supports the next generation of public health professionals by offering academic internships and practicum requirements. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Interns may contribute to projects across community health and outreach, environmental health, epidemiology, emergency preparedness, public health nursing, public health social work, and health education.

Each internship matches student interest and academic requirements with departmental priorities to create meaningful, mutually beneficial experiences. Interns will gain practical understanding of local public health operations and FHD’s role in advancing community well-being. Interns may assist in most departmental activities except those requiring professional licensure or of a highly confidential nature. Each opportunity will require working across departmental program areas and may include interacting with the public. Traveling to other sites such as schools, homes, festivals, businesses, and housing communities is expected. Interns must be able to work under the direction of assigned program staff and work in-person at FHD’s offices.

  • $ 18.00 Hourly (Graduate Interns)

Examples of Duties:

  • Contribute to FHD initiatives in one or more program areas.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute health education courses under the direction of the FHD Health Educator.
  • Work with the FHD Community Outreach Manager to develop and deliver partnership activities with external organizations to improve health and wellbeing of the community.
  • Assist the department to identify, plan, and implement evidence-based and actionable preventative programs to address issues such as mental health, substance use, and social needs to enhance wellbeing.
  • Work with Health Inspectors to conduct inspections, sample collection, and routine surveillance on environmental health programs.
  • Conduct research and analysis to develop public health policy, operational procedures, program materials or evaluation, and other educational resources.
  • Coordinate and conduct outreach activities to support current FHD activities.
  • Work collaboratively with all team members to assure an equity-focused approach to public health services.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the Fishers community, neighborhoods, and organizations.
  • Provide outreach to community members at local events such as farmer’s markets, festivals, school events and other locations.
  • Perform additional projects and other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school students in their junior or senior year;
  • Second, third, or fourth year of undergraduate program, or enrolled in a graduate program, and pursuing a degree focusing on public health, epidemiology, community health, environmental health, social work, or related disciplines; or completion of similar degree within the past 12 months;
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s license and ability to be insured to drive city vehicles except for high school student interns;
  • Attention to detail is required;
  • Ability to work in a team environment;
  • Must exhibit flexibility working with a wide variety of populations and organizations;
  • Must be able to work occasional evening and weekend hours based on business needs.

  • Work will include regular interaction with employees and the public. Periodic duties may require performance in non-office settings, outdoors, or at a variety of locations external to the FHD administrative offices.
  • Information sharing and teamwork - interns are encouraged to collaborate and assist with streamlining processes and procedures as they relate to Public Health.
