Primary Duties
Responsible for managing log flows within the facility. This includes all aspects of managing the log inventories, to sorting, decking, and delivering logs to, and supporting the LUC, (Log Utilization Center). Responsible for maintenance of all associated equipment as well as responsible for environmental compliance of Waste Water and Storm Water Systems and Landfill management.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for log storage, log rotation, and rolling stock maintenance.
  • Assists in preparation of budgets in areas of responsibility, ensures that operating costs stay within established budgets, and conducts periodic meetings with employees.
  • Monitors activity and ensures environmental compliance of Log Yard, Waste Water, and Storm Water Systems, including all associated environmental record keeping and reporting.
  • Determines priority of maintenance requirements. Reviews preventative maintenance schedules and manages all rolling stock maintenance concerns.
  • Monitors and reports safety, quality, production, and maintenance information to management in entire area of responsibility.
  • Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other plant department superintendents.
  • Trains and develops supervisory and hourly employees in all aspects of safe work practices, including job safety, accident investigation, safety meetings, conducts training, develops processes.
  • Develops positive employee relations, promptly handles and resolves employee complaints, grievances, and performance issues. Knowledgeable of plant policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to safety, quality, environmental awareness, and continuous process improvement.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience/Physical Functions
College degree, or equivalent work experience in related job function. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a wood products manufacturing environment with special emphasis in log yard management processes. Requires analytical and problem-solving skills as well as a good working knowledge of computers.

Must have the ability to generate and understand production models. Good written and oral communication skills are required.

Decision-Making/Supervisory
Decisions guided by policies, procedures with oversight from manager. Typically supervises the daily activities of two or more employees. May guide other supervisors and/or leads.

Scope
Responsible for maintaining log quality by managing log rotations, decking practices, log deck sprinkling schedules, log yard ground maintenance, and maintenance of rolling stock used for log handling in both the Log Yard and the Log Utilization Center including equipment used for Landfill and grounds maintenance. Responsible for the Complex Landfill site and all of the Waste Water and Storm Water systems, several acres of agricultural fields used for Waste Water management, an onsite rock pit and the environmental reporting and compliance issues associated with these systems.
