Job Description

Overview A PowerPlan Business Analyst works with a team of anywhere from 2-8 people to help configure and customize PowerPlan’s software to meet the specific accounting needs and business processes of utility customers. Analysts must fully understand the design documents for each component of the software that they are responsible for configuring. Analysts help build the solution by writing SQL scripts, assisting in the configuration of interfaces, converting and translating data, and testing the solution to ensure it meets the client’s desired outcomes. The primary objective of a 1st year Analyst is to learn PowerPlan’s functionality quickly, as well as the basic tools and processes used to configure it. Project timelines range from 3 months to 2 years depending on the size and depth of scope. Typically, an Analyst will work only one project at a time until showing the proficiency to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Analysts may be expected to travel to client sites up to 50% of the time. Performance Objectives Learn PowerPlan’s core product line by completing a comprehensive four-week training: This includes a high-level understanding of PowerPlan’s platform, functionality, applications, data structure, relevant tools (SQL, PowerBuilder, SourceTree, JIRA, etc.), and the basics of utility accounting. After completing the training, Analysts should be able to complete a mockup build or execute against a design document while working with the rest of the hiring class using a local database and copy of the application. Learn the basics public utility accounting as it relates to one’s practice area: Analysts are required to learn basic accounting principles and how PowerPlan’s software automates these functions through features and configuration settings. Develop a complete understanding of each client project: Within the first few days of receiving a new project, the Analyst will review the signed statement of work, research client background and key contacts, and prepare for the initial meetings. Assist in creating and configuring the build: Analysts should be able to help configure PowerPlan’s software according to the design documents agreed upon by the Solution Architect and the client. Analysts work with PowerPlan’s Testing Services team to identify and support the running of appropriate testing scripts. Analysts support client users by identifying the root cause of any issues discovered through the testing process, resolving the issues, and pushing the updates for validation. 75% of an Analyst’s time is spent in helping configure the build. Types of projects include: New Client Implementations: Converting client data from external sources into PowerPlan and configuring modules to specific client needs using SQL scripts and PowerBuilder code objects. Upgrades: Upgrading clients’ application and database to the latest software version. This includes creating SQL scripts and occasionally updating PowerBuilder objects. This may also involve enabling new features available in the upgraded application version. Upgrade projects may be paired with enhancement projects to address pre-existing client pain points and other issues. Expert Services: These special projects may comprise anything from ERP transformation initiatives to Mergers and Acquisitions to updates necessary for compliance with legislation changes. Expert services assignments will typically involve a blend of functional accounting knowledge with SQL and PowerBuilder skills. Internal Initiatives: Occasionally, opportunities to participate in internal initiatives may present themselves, or analysts may be directly asked to support them. Though the primary focus will be on billable work, internal initiatives are special projects that aim to improve quality of PowerPlan delivery, provide new features to our customers, facilitate process automation, and more. Troubleshoot problems on assigned tasks and conduct unit testing: Analysts must quickly learn how to understand the ins and outs of the basic functionality of PowerPlan’s solutions. Ultimately, this knowledge will be focused on a few key areas or modules until the Analyst has been exposed to a wide enough variety of tasks to understand how the PowerPlan system functions as a whole. Analysts will conduct unit testing in their areas of the configuration to ensure that their completed work meets the expectations of the designed solution. Track progress and provide regular and timely reports to the project manager: On projects, analysts actively report to a Project Manager and will be responsible for providing accurate status updates, reliable timeline estimates for assigned tasks, and potential project obstacles. Observe design meetings: Analysts will participate in meetings with key stakeholders at the client’s site or remotely, primarily listening and observing. During design, the Analyst is expected to develop an understanding of the project objectives, the client’s current processes, and any relevant data requirements necessary to complete the build. Learn where and how to get answers: Analysts are expected develop a familiarity with the internal tools and resources available to self-source answers to questions. Though PowerPlan offers a collaborative work environment, Analysts are expected to perform due diligence prior to seeking assistance from senior team members. Metrics / Attitudes
