JOB SUMMARY


The Bus Attendant assists students during transport to and from school and special activities; and ensures the safety and well-being of the special education students on the bus.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Speak, read, write, analyze, understand, and follow written and verbal communication in English including grammar and punctuation; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing
  3. Ability to pass the Physical Assessment Standards for Utah School Bus Attendants
  4. Hold or obtain CPR & First Aid Certificate within six months of hire
  5. Adaptability and understanding of cultural differences and in working in a diverse environment while coping with stressful situations related to students

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Prior experience working with children with special needs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist special education students (e.g., crossing in front of bus, getting wheelchairs off and on, attaching safety vests, during evacuation drills, walkers, etc.) to ensure they drop off at appropriate destinations and get safely to the curb or sidewalk along with providing for special needs during transport, safe loading and unloading from buses, including both emergencies and normal transport. Secure students with seat belts and wheelchairs with tie-downs to ensure the safety and well-being of students
  2. As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds
  3. Assist bus driver in the instruction of students (e.g., bus safety, safe crossing, safe loading and unloading, staying out of danger zone, etc.) to enforce rules and regulations and maintain safety
  4. Learn bus routes to assist substitute bus drivers filling-in for regular driver
  5. Monitor students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc
  6. Monitors student behavior (e.g., unruly, disruptive, abusive language, physical challenges, weapons, drugs, etc.) to prevent distraction to the driver or injury to themselves or other students and passengers
  7. Respond to emergency situations (e.g., injured student, etc.) to resolve immediate safety concerns and direct them to appropriate personnel for resolution
  8. Report observations and incidents (e.g., discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) to appropriate personnel
  9. Prepare documentation (e.g., incident reports, records, paperwork required by school district, etc.) to document activities, provide written support, and convey information
  10. Participate in meetings, workshops, training and seminars, as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions
  11. Exercise good judgment and discretion while maintaining confidentiality to promote a positive working environment
  12. Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions, as required
  13. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position. Assist other personnel and perform other duties as may be required to ensure an efficient and effective work environment
  14. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  15. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  16. Work under limited supervision, utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies, accurately processing detailed information, and meeting deadlines
  17. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS


The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds, might need to drag up to 125 pounds, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
