THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Director of Transportation or designee, is responsible for assisting the Bus Driver in the loading, unloading, care and supervision of students ensuring a safe, clean, and positive environment during transport.

CURRENT OPENING : Five 10-month/20 hours per week positions. Salary placement will be on Range 15 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($20.77 per hour) of this salary range.

Optional Second Language Requirements : Some positions in this classification require the ability to speak, read, and write a second language in addition to English, and may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277).

Essential Duties

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class.  This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

  • Assists Bus Driver in the securing of students and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
  • Assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses.
  • Monitors and supervises students and school bus activities to ensure proper student conduct at all times and to maintain adherence to District policies.
  • Participates in meetings, in-service trainings, workshops, etc. as assigned.
  • Prepares reports (e.g., incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.) for the purposes of documenting activities and complying with established guidelines.

  • Instructs students for the purpose of enforcing rules/regulations and maintaining student safety.
  • Reports observations and/or incidents for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel for action.
  • Communicates with District personnel regarding student conduct as appropriate.
  • Assists with maintaining a clean bus environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education : No education required.

Experience : Six months of paid or unpaid experience working with and/or caring for students.  Some experience in working with children with special needs is desirable.

Special Requirements :

  • Possession of a valid First Aid certificate and must be kept valid during the term of employment.
  • Possession of a valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by a recognized training program and must be kept valid during the term of employment.
  • Completion of Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention (NCPI) training within the first six months of employment (provided by the District).
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. Absence of back problems or any other physical impairments that might preclude the performance of physical labor or lifting must be evident.

  • Maintain balance while standing when bus is in motion and stopping.
  • Maintain confidential information.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Handle situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus.

  • Perform minor first aid as needed.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as needed.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
