Reports To: Early Intervention Program Manager and/or Director of Time Limited Programs

Schedule: Full-time/Part-Time Flexible Monday - Friday

Position Overview:

The Internship program is designed to help students reach their potential by outlining the categories of social work competencies. The internship program will follow the learning contract from the school to make sure each student's competencies are covered. Interns will be able to gain hands-on experience working within the social work field. This internship does not offer clinical supervision. However, Agate will complete the paperwork required for program hour requirements and the evaluation of internship performance.

The intern will assist in case management responsibilities for various Agate programs, including but not limited to site and community-based housing and shelter. These responsibilities will help the intern gain hands-on experience in client engagement, needs assessment, service coordination, and documentation. This role is designed to help the intern develop foundational case management skills and learn effective techniques for supporting diverse and individual needs. The intern will learn about community resources and strategies to help participants locate housing, employment, and other essential services such as medical, mental health care, and basic needs. In this position, they will work with a team to support daily operations within the shelter or housing programs. The goal in each of these programs is to build rapport and assist individuals to stabilize their housing and achieve self-sufficiency. In addition, the position provides information and referrals for participants and visitors. The intern will also assist with administrative tasks as requested for various Agate programs.

Housing and Shelter Responsibilities:

  • Maintain healthy boundaries and engage directly with participants, including skillfully de-escalating situations and supporting individuals in crisis or exhibiting challenging behaviors.
  • Support clients who struggle with mental illness or chemical dependency by building trusting relationships, offering compassionate listening, connecting them to appropriate resources, and helping them navigate challenges to maintain stability and achieve their goals.
  • Regularly engage with tenants or program participants to build trust, foster positive relationships, and support a calm, safe, and welcoming environment.
  • Work with staff when emergencies arise, call emergency services when appropriate, and assist in managing behaviors by utilizing de-escalation techniques.
  • Support a safe and respectful environment by positively reinforcing policies with consistency, fairness, and compassion.
  • Assist with administrative and operational work to support programs, tenants, and property as needed.
  • Provide compassionate case management when working with tenants or program participants, including de-escalating challenging situations, maintaining accurate and timely documentation, coordinating services, assisting participants in accessing housing and health resources, and supporting individualized goal planning to promote stability and well-being.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Establish rapport quickly with people experiencing a crisis using trauma informed care, person-centered care, and strength-based approaches.
  • Maintain accurate and timely paperwork and documentation by demonstrating strong organizational skills, attention to detail, efficient work habits, and proficiency with technology and computer systems.
  • Attend meetings with other support services organizations or training as needed.
  • Attend team meetings and 1:1's with supervisor.
  • Respond to voicemails, emails, and other communication promptly.
  • Work respectfully with participants, coworkers, and key stakeholders who are diverse with respect to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and religion.

Required Qualifications:

  • Seeking an associate degree or bachelor's degree in human services, mental health, or equivalent field, and require at least 400 hours as part of the program requirements.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to pass a DHS background check, which requires fingerprinting.
  • Commitment to Agate Housing and Services' values and mission of ending homelessness and relieving hunger through action and advocacy.
  • Commitment to working towards an anti-racist culture both within Agate and the community.
  • Hold the belief that every household can achieve housing stability.
  • Commitment to harm reduction and housing first philosophies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Lived experience of homelessness, experience working, interning, or volunteering with people experiencing homelessness.
  • Fluency in languages used by our participants (Spanish, Amharic, Oromo, Somali, ASL)
